[This is a pilot article as posted on the 3rd of March, 2019 - If by chance Joshua hires new writers, I welcome those new writers for NWC to adopt this as the site's regular, Mind you - This is mainly to recommend games from Hamster's ongoing Arcade Archives and ACA NEO GEO lines of releases on the Switch eShop] Since this is the pilot article and i'm the one writing this.... I'll provide my selection to titles for you folks to try out, sure - some are likely not to all's taste but they are fun just the same First off Money Puzzle Exchanger (aka Money Idol Exchanger) [ACA NEO GEO] Original Publisher: FACE Year of Release: January 17, 1997
Let's get this out of the way first, Yes! It looks like a Magical Drop clone, however despite the obvious similarities to Data East's "Magical Drop" series is has 2 quirks to differ from it which adds to the addictive nature Namely, The characters and the game play, In the series Magical Drop, You match identical color orbs to clear the screen... however in this game, It relies on addition by means of money - for example, by matching 4 of the 5 coin pieces it converts to a 10, 4 10s become 50s and so on and so on Yes, It sounds tricky but i assure you, It's more fun than it sounds Recommendation Level: 8.5 out of 10 (Very Considerable but Fun) Bomb Jack (as part of the Arcade Archives line) Original Year of Release: 1984 Original Publisher: Tehkan (now known as Koei Tecmo)
This might be considered cheating but this game is one of my guilty pleasures (along with it's sequel, Bomb Jack Twin) during my years of using MAME, While the game looks simple - You may die quite a lot as Bomb Jack himself is a wee floaty, while it's a tad troublesome flaw.. it adds to the charm of the game
Recommendation Level: 8.4 (Addictive but gamers in [current year] will whine about "childish" it is)
Puzzle Bobble 2 (aka Bust-A-Move Again) Original Publisher: Taito (now a subsidiary of Square-Enix)
Original Year of Release: 1995
[note: While it's called "Bust-A-Move Again" in the US and Europe, This is the first time in the west that the game is released commercially as "Puzzle Bobble 2"]
Now i know you're asking me, Why i'm recommending Puzzle Bobble 2 over Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust-A-Move)?
Well for one, It has more options and also, It looks more easy on the eyes compared to it's original
Not to mention that some of the puzzles are more forgiving than the original
Recommendation Level: 9.0 out of 10
Note: Puzzle Bobble [the original] is ok on it's own terms, If you wish to buy it alongside this - I won't stop ya
Puzzled (aka Joy Joy Kid) Original Publisher: SNK Original Year of Release: 1990
Yes, It's a Tetris game on the surface but it's not your ORDINARY game of Tetris This one requires more logic than the original game that inspired it, The goal is basically use your Tetris skills (mind you, this was made long before the current Tetris standards went into effect so your skills from Tetris as you know it now won't apply much) to free the air balloons from their blocky prisons While [current year] gamers (merely pathetic as they are given they willfully apply "Dark Souls" to anything that's hard to them) will find this difficult, With the right amount of skill - The game is rather enjoyable in it's own right Recommendation Level: 8.9 out of 10 (for those that Tetris but wish to try it with a little spin) All of Nintendo's entries (Arcade Archives) [Mario Bros. arcade pic for example]
Yes, To some of you - This might be cheating a bit but Nintendo's ACA entries (all of them) are worth a purchase While to some, Games like Ice Climber, VS. Super Mario Bros and the upcoming releases VS. Pinball and VS. Balloon Fight may look like ports of NES games at face value but they do differ heavily from their NES counterparts in many ways from difficulty, animation to many other forms (i advise go to YouTube to view them for yourselves) Recommendation Level: 10 out of 10 and our last recommendation for this pilot, Moon Patrol Original Publisher: Irem Original Year of Release: 1982
Why this game? I played a port of this game on the Atari 2600 when i was a kid and it became a favorite for me since While it looks tedious at first, Trust me - It's really keeps you on your toes as there are obstacles that will kick your ass during your session Recommendation Level: 8.8 out of 10 (Screw current year placebo, Play this game!)
