A couple of months ago, I made a very important article about why Switch owners must benefit from the Switch being region free Sadly, There are still those with severe doubts This is likely (with any hope resolve some concerns) 1: [involving eShop] Do i have to region swap to access eShops from other regions? While there are people that do get lucky with region swapping with their Switch units, The answer is plainly no! Why you ask? It's kinda simple tho a wee complex as well Region Swapping is a risk taking endeavor though the biggest casualty is basically the likelihood of seeing your main region (UK/EU/AU/NZ/US,etc.)'s eShop wallet be erased Nintendo Switch Online also forbids region swapping so it's also a note of why it's not a risk worthy of taking Another issue with region swapping comes in forms of redeeming physical games, buying DLC for Japanese games (PriPara, Taiko no Tatsujin, etc.) and re-redeem the respectable region's currency to buy a game from said region So it's best to set up a separate regional account, While to some (namely the CBs of the Switch fandom) it's a bit of a hassle but it's more safe and efficient To learn more on how it's done, refer to this link for how to set up one and how to acquire regional currency for the JPN account: https://tiredoldhack.com/2017/04/14/how-to-buy-switch-eshop-games-from-different-regions/ 2: There are Games that will likely be in Japanese, will this be a problem? In instances, yes but rest assured, There are games that are capable of being in English or are playable without knowing Japanese While sure, Games like PriPara: All Idol Perfect Stage maybe a problem because of Japanese but at least we got GameFAQs to help us Here are some examples of import friendly titles English supported: Taiko no Tatsujin: Nintendo Switch Version! (aka: Drum 'n' Fun)* [*update patch required for the English Support], Darius Cozmic Collection (physical only), Super Robot Taisen T (East Asia version is in english but not the Japan version, so import it from Play-Asia), Kunio-Kun: The World Classics Collection and Kamen Rider Climax Scramble Playable w/o knowing Japanese: Bike Rider DX, The Demon Crystal, The Demon Crystal 2, Puyopuyo eSports and PriPara: All Idol Perfect Stage [a guide to help you: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/231530-pripara-all-idol-perfect-stage/76479273] Not to mention for those that are space conscious, Japanese physical releases of Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: EVERY BUDDY!, Katamari Damacy REROLL and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy are confirmed to be playable in english 3: Why is the Famicom app worth getting? and is it playable on my region's Nintendo Switch Online account?
Let's not beat around the bush, The Famicom app is similar to the NES app in the West though with some differences For one, the Famicom app has FDS (Famicom Disk System) versions of titles like Pro Wrestling, Metroid and The Legend of Zelda (complete with FM audio) and also there will be some Japan exclusives like Joy Mech Fight and Tsuppari Oozumou, Sure - It might be a challenge playing them in japanese but there are games that are fun regardless of their language barrier for example, Joy Mech Fight and Tsuppari Oozumou as for the latter question, Yes! It is possible to play the Famicom app on your region's Switch Online account In closing: While it's true that some games that look like that aren't coming are coming to the west (Penguin Wars, Little Friends: Cats and Dogs, etc.) but some aren't so lucky whether it being for legal reasons or the IP is too niche to even take a risk (or anything else of note) This is why Importing is a must, as there is games that look unique and fun to play but the likelihood of them coming here is up in the air Yes, It was confirmed that The Demon Crystal games were confirmed for the west but there are no word as of now as to when will they released stateside or who will publish them - so They are still JPN only until something comes up Importing is like an adventure, Yes! there will be issues like patience (mainly for shipping to country whether from Play-Asia or elsewhere) or risking your eShop wallet to region swap but the rewards outweigh the risk It opens your mind to the world's content and restricting your options to one region is often times stressful as we know from the Wii, Wii U and 3DS days with us begging publishers to bring certain games stateside due to region locks Thankfully, With the Switch being Nintendo's first fully region free console - those days are over and we must be grateful for this opportunity
