Joshua- Contributor I write about all things Nintendo

It's Pokémon Day tomorrow, a celebration of anything and everything relating to our favorite collectable creatures as represented through more or less every form of media capable of representing collectable creatures. That means a bunch of things, from in-game events to new merchandise and anime marathons. For fans of the mainline RPGs, however, all eyes will be on a just-announced Nintendo Direct tomorrow, where it seems like we have a pretty good idea of what we'll see. Here's what you can expect when the direct airs tomorrow at 9:00 AM Eastern.
Nintendo has already confirmed that we're getting we're getting a new Pokémon RPG for Nintendo Switch in 2019, and astute observers will note that the year has already been going on for two months. Which means it's about time to tell us about the new game, expected to release in the fall as one of Nintendo's anchor games for the holiday season. It will be the follow-up to Pokémon Sun and Moon, which were the last major entries in the series, and as usual, we expect there to be two games.
Beyond that, we don't know much. These won't, strictly speaking, be the first Pokémon games on a home console--that accolade goes to the Pokémon Let's Go games from last year. They will, however, be the first completely new Pokémon games on a home console, and they're still a sort of milestone for that reason. I'll be interested to see what sort of adaptations Nintendo makes to the old formula: Sun and Moon were already more approachable than X and Y before them, but they were still nothing like the Pokémon GO-influenced world of Let's Go. I don't think that we'll see something like dramatically simplified wild Pokémon encounters, but I wouldn't mind if these games followed Let's Go by removing random encounters and replacing them with a lush world of wandering creatures.
That's my major question with these new games: to what degree will they embrace the relatively complex mechanics of the mainline RPGs so far, and to what degree will they simplify the experience for anyone that signed up with Let's Go. Pleasing stalwarts and new fans alike is a tightrope for any developer, but hopefully Game Freak can pull it off.
